Hi Lynette, Thanks for reaching out. I can help with pruning and disease management, but I need a few details to provide an accurate quote. Can you tell me the tree height or approximate mature height, trunk diameter at chest height, and confirm this is the only tree to be pruned? Photos from the street and from the base of the tree are very helpful. Is the tree in the front or back yard and is there easy access for our crew and equipment (driveway, gates, stairs)? Also let me know how close the tree is to the house, garage, or overhead wires. Black knot disease means we will likely need more careful pruning, separate disposal of infected material, and possibly follow-up treatment, which increases time and cost. Because size and access affect price I can either provide a ballpark after photos or schedule a quick site visit to confirm details. We can do a quick site visit to confirm details and provide a firm quote. No need to be home and we offer flexible scheduling. Thanks, and feel free to give us a shout if you have any questions, Max, Calgary Tree Care & Arborist Service (587) 329-7161

Single tree with suspected black knot disease which will affect pruning technique, disposal, and may require follow-up care.

I am not sure of the tree's height—maybe 15 feet?? The diameter of the trunk before it begins to branch out is 41.5 inches. This is the only tree requiring pruning. I have attached some photos. I hope they are what you need. The tree is in the backyard. There is a paved back alley behind the fence so access should be very easy. There are no overhead wires. I am not good with distances, but I am guessing the tree is 6 feet from the back fence and 20 feet from the house. If you think you need a site visit, feel free. Hi Lynette, Thanks, that is very helpful. Based on the details you sent, and assuming the photos match what you described, I would expect the pruning for the one tree to fall in the range of $480 to $960, including cleanup and disposal. The main factor will be how much black knot needs to be cut out and how much live canopy can be safely removed while still keeping the tree viable. If the infection is fairly limited, it would likely be toward the lower end. If there is more extensive infected wood throughout the canopy, it would be toward the higher end. If you would like to move ahead, I can pass this along to the owner and they can contact you directly to confirm next steps. If after reviewing the photos they feel a site visit would be helpful before finalizing the quote, they will let you know. Best, Max Calgary Tree Care & Arborist Service (587) 329-7161

After reading your email, I looked at the tree again and can see some other areas with black knot. I need to figure out whether the tree can be saved or whether I should be asking for a tree removal quote. Hi Lynette, Thanks for the update. If you are now seeing black knot in several other areas, the right next step would be to have the tree reviewed to determine whether it can still be reasonably saved with pruning, or whether removal makes more sense. With black knot, that usually depends on how much of the canopy is affected and whether the infected wood can be removed without taking too much of the live structure of the tree. If the infection is limited, pruning may still be worthwhile. If it is more widespread, removal can sometimes be the better long term option. I have passed this along to the owner, and they will contact you directly to coordinate a site visit. If it helps in the meantime, you can also reply with a couple of updated photos showing the newly affected areas, and we can add those to the file for review. Hi Lynette, Thank you, that sounds good. When you get home, please send over the additional photos of the newly affected areas and we will add them to the file for review. That should help us better judge whether the tree is still a good candidate for pruning or whether removal is the better option. I have already passed this along to the owner, and if a site visit is needed they will contact you directly to coordinate it. Best, Max Calgary Tree Care & Arborist Service (587) 329-7161

Hi Lynette, Thanks for sending those over. I have added the new photos to your file for review. Since the question is now whether the tree can still be reasonably saved with pruning, or whether removal makes more sense, the best next step is to have the owner review this and coordinate a site visit if needed. I have forwarded the updated photos along. The owner will contact you directly regarding next steps and scheduling. Best, Max Calgary Tree Care & Arborist Service (587) 329-7161
