Two fruit trees (apple and pear) in backyard needing pruning/shaping; customer asks about August timing.

Hi Rick, Thanks for getting in touch about your apple and pear trees. August can be fine for light shaping and thinning of fruit trees, but heavier structural pruning is usually best in late winter; I can advise the best approach once I see the trees. To provide an accurate quote I need either a couple photos of each tree (wide shot plus a close trunk/branch shot) or quick details on tree height and trunk diameter, and confirmation of backyard access (gate width, any stairs or tight spots). You can email photos to rwistead@telus.net or text them to (587) 329-7161. I can also do a short site visit (no need for you to be home) and provide a firm written estimate afterward. If you want to proceed, send photos or let me know a few times that work for a visit and I will schedule it. Smaller, easily accessed fruit trees typically take less time and sit at the lower end of any quote, while larger trees, limited access, or any work near structures raise the cost. Thanks, and feel free to give us a shout if you have any questions, Max, Calgary Tree Care & Arborist Service (587) 329-7161

Thanks Max for your prompt response to my request. Let’s start with the apple tree photos. I would say the trees are 12-15’ tall Readily accessed via gate. Hi Rick, Thanks, that helps. At 12 to 15 feet tall with good gate access, this sounds like a straightforward fruit tree pruning job. For two smaller fruit trees like that, a rough ballpark would usually be in the $240 to $480 range including cleanup and disposal, depending on how much shaping and thinning they need. Go ahead and send the apple tree photos when you have them, and once I can see the structure I can tighten that up for you. After that, feel free to send the pear tree photos as well and I can put together a more complete estimate for both. Best, Max Calgary Tree Care & Arborist Service (587) 329-7161

Hi Rick, Thanks for sending those over. Based on the photos and the size you mentioned, both trees look like a straightforward pruning and shaping job with good access. A reasonable estimate for the apple and pear together would be $240 to $480, including cleanup and disposal. The final price within that range mainly depends on how much thinning and shaping you want done, and whether there is much deadwood to remove. If you'd like to move ahead, just reply back and I can pass it along for booking. If you want, you can also let me know whether you're looking for a lighter tidy-up or a heavier pruning, and I can narrow the estimate a bit further. Did you not receive any photos? Hi Rick, Sorry about the confusion. Yes, we did receive the photos, thank you. Based on the photos, the apple and pear trees look like a straightforward pruning and shaping job with good access. The estimate for both trees is still $240 to $480, including cleanup and disposal. The final price within that range mainly depends on whether you want a lighter tidy-up or more thorough thinning and shaping. If you'd like to move ahead, just reply back and I can pass it along for booking. Best, Max Calgary Tree Care & Arborist Service (587) 329-7161

Thanks Max, I’m no tree expert other than harvesting and consuming. I don’t think there is much deadwood and I wouldn’t know how much thinning or shaping is required, so would it make sense for you to drop by? I am retired so I’m around most week day, especially the afternoons Rick On Thu, Aug 27, 2026 at 3:14 PM Calgary Tree Care & Arbourist Service < info@calgarytreecareservice.ca> wrote: > Hi Rick, > > Thanks for sending those over. > > Based on the photos and the size you mentioned, both trees look like a > straightforward pruning and shaping job with good access. Hi Rick, Yes, that makes sense. Since you are not sure how much thinning or shaping is needed, a quick look in person would be the best way to confirm the right scope and firm up the price for the apple and pear trees. I have passed your request along to the owner, and they will contact you directly to coordinate a time that works. Thanks as well for letting us know that weekday afternoons are generally good for you. At this point the rough estimate is still $240 to $480 for both trees, including cleanup and disposal, and the visit will help narrow that down. Thanks Max. It may also answer the question, now or later pruning? Looking forward to hearing back from the owner. Hi Rick, You are welcome. Yes, that is exactly the kind of thing an in-person look will help confirm. In general, light fruit tree pruning and shaping can often be done now, while heavier structural pruning is usually better left for late winter. Once the owner sees the apple and pear trees in person, they can give you a clearer recommendation on the best timing for each one. I have already passed your request along, and the owner will contact you directly to coordinate the visit. Best, Max Calgary Tree Care & Arborist Service (587) 329-7161
