Hello, My name is Padraig McMullan and I’m the Executive Director of Good Companions 50 Plus Club, a registered charity and community centre in southwest Calgary that has served older adults since 1974. We are planning to add 6–8 hardy shade trees to our property, together with some dense, drought-tolerant shrub planting, and I’d value an arborist-led quote and species recommendation. One area we are particularly interested in is along the garden-bed/fence side of the property. We would like the planting to provide meaningful future shade and soften the exposed fence line, while also making casual access through that side less inviting — but without creating hidden areas or poor security sightlines. Could you please quote for: - supply of 6–8 suitable Calgary-hardy shade trees - professional planting - soil preparation/amendment and mulch where needed - establishment/watering guidance - warranty or replacement terms, if available If you also provide shrub planting, I’d be happy for that to be included as a separate item. We are a small nonprofit, so cost matters. Any nonprofit/community pricing, donated materials, reduced labour or other support you could offer would be greatly appreciated. The Club is at 2609 19 Ave SW, Calgary. I’d be happy to arrange a site visit. Thank you very much for considering us. Warm regards, Padraig McMullan Executive Director Good Companions 50 Plus Club 403-249-6991 padraig@gc50plus.org gc50plus.org
Hi Padraig, Thanks for reaching out, and for the background on Good Companions 50 Plus Club. This sounds like a thoughtful project, and we would be happy to help with recommendations and pricing. Based on what you described, a preliminary budget range for supplying and planting 6 to 8 Calgary-hardy shade trees would typically fall around $4,500 to $9,500, depending on species, tree size, exact planting locations, and access. That would generally include planting, basic soil preparation or amendment where needed, mulch, and establishment guidance. We can also provide a separate item for drought-tolerant shrub planting, as requested. Because species selection and layout are important here, especially along the fence line where you want added shade and screening without creating poor sightlines, the best next step would be a site visit so we can provide a more accurate quote and suitable recommendations. Thanks for offering that. I have passed your request along, and the owner will contact you directly to coordinate a time that works. We can also review warranty or replacement terms as part of the formal quote. If you have any photos of the planting areas, feel free to send them over as well, they can help us prepare ahead of the visit. Best, Max Calgary Tree Care & Arborist Service (587) 329-7161
Hi Max, Thank you — this is really helpful, and the preliminary range gives me something useful to work with while we plan the project. A site visit sounds like the right next step, especially for the fence-line planting and making sure we get the shade and screening benefit without creating visibility issues. I'll watch for the owner's call and we can arrange a suitable time. It would be great if the formal quote could show the trees and the drought-tolerant shrubs separately, and include the warranty/replacement terms you mentioned. That will make it much easier for us when we match the work against available grant funding. Thanks again for taking the time to think this through with us. Hi Padraig, Thank you, and I appreciate the pronunciation note. That all makes sense. We will make sure the formal quote breaks out the tree planting and the drought-tolerant shrub planting separately, and includes the warranty and replacement terms as requested. I've passed your note along to the owner, and they will contact you directly to coordinate the site visit. If you happen to have any photos of the fence-line and other planting areas, feel free to send them over in the meantime. They can help us prepare for the visit and the quote. Hi Max, Just following up on this one when you have a chance. We’re now pulling the project purchasing together and I’d really appreciate the formal itemized quote you mentioned. Could it please show separately: - 6–8 hardy shade trees suitable for Calgary - drought-tolerant/native shrub hedging - soil and mulch - planting/site preparation and labour If there are sensible options at different tree sizes or price points, feel free to show those too. We’re a registered charity, so any nonprofit/community pricing you’re able to offer would be very much appreciated. Thanks again for your help with this. Hi Padraig, Thanks for following up. I understand you are pulling the project purchasing together and would like the formal itemized quote. I have passed this along to the owner for review. We will make sure the quote is structured to show the tree planting, shrub hedging, soil and mulch, and planting labour separately, and we can also note different tree size or budget options where that makes sense. I have also included your request for any nonprofit or community pricing consideration. If you have any photos of the planting areas, feel free to send them over, as they can help with preparing the quote. If a site visit is still needed to finalize species, layout, and pricing, the owner will contact you directly to coordinate that. Best, Max Calgary Tree Care & Arborist Service (587) 329-7161
